The MSW programme is offered in a hybrid mode which involves running online programme via Moodle and this is expected to cover all regions in the future. The idea is to use computers to deliver lectures, assignments and tests. Different zones will be developed based on the number of applicants from various regions to facilitate this process (so far we are envisaging zonal centres to be Arusha, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Mbeya, Kigoma and Ruvuma in addition to the Dar es Salaam Zone).

The aim of the hybrid mode is to ensure high standards of the programme as course leaders play the role of ensuring clear guidelines for the course as well as the learning materials from authorised sources.

The minimum duration for the MSW is expected to be twelve months (six months for course works and 6 months for research papers and field work practicum).

The purpose of the programme is to produce social workers who are well knowledgeable, organized and professional as well as practical. They should be able to provide social work services that are necessary competent to the vulnerable groups in the society such as children, youth, the old and most vulnerable population effectively in the community and various social settings. The following is expected for the MSW graduates:

Ø  Utilize scientific approach on applying Evidence Based Indirect Practice intervention strategies to fight oppression and discrimination against vulnerable people in the society.

Ø  Understand diversity and social functioning as well as advancement of human rights, social and economic justice

Ø  Develop Critical thinking and apply the theoretical and empirical knowledge and skills of social work towards the client and social systems.

Ø   Utilize appropriate models, approaches and methods of effecting and evaluating change in communities and policy arenas based on a multidimensional risk assessment and the goals of the practice interventions in reducing risk and impacts of disasters.

Ø  Advocate through professional and political means, for policies and programs that address the social and economic well-being of community members in need of assistance.

Ø  Fully understand and apply the systems and ecological perspectives in understanding human behaviour.

Ø  Use advanced administrative practice skills designed to influence policy and/or program development, implementation, or change on behalf of clients and/or communities in the indirect  practice

Ø   Practice case management (planning, implementing, supervising and monitoring cases)

February Night Skies over Tanzania

The world woke up on February 15 to a shocking asteroid strike in the skies over a small Russian town. The nearly 10 ton asteroid caused much damage to property and injured hundreds by its shock wave due to its hypersonic speed of more than 100,000 kilometers per hour, which is about 100 times the speed of sound.  Such an extremely rare event was even more remarkable because of the coincidence of another extremely rare event.  A much larger 50 ton asteroid 2012 D14 that had been accurately predicted to fly by close to Earth also passed us safely that night.
